New Level 2 Intermediate/Foundation Apprenticeship for Nursing Assistants in a Veterinary Setting

Veterinary practices across the UK are urged to participate in a consultation, organised by Lantra, focusing on the proposed development of a new Level 2 Intermediate/Foundation Apprenticeship for support and auxiliary staff in veterinary practice.

While the proposed Level 2 Apprenticeship would be primarily available for use in England and Wales, Lantra, the Sector Skills Council supporting the UK’s veterinary activities, is asking for feedback and participation from practices UK-wide. The consultation will begin as an online survey and will be followed with a working group on Tuesday 18th October.

RVN Lisa Jarvis leads Lantra’s work with the animal health and welfare industries. She will be working with Jo-Anne Bryan, Lantra’s Apprenticeship Manager to support this consultation and liaise with industry to make sure the framework is designed to best support the needs of veterinary practices.

Lisa said: “In order to promote the health and welfare of animals, all staff working in a practice should have the opportunity to undergo appropriate training. In order to guarantee the training includes the fundamental skills needed by a practice, we need as many practices to get involved and provide guidance and feedback. We need your support and expertise to shape the Level 2 Intermediate/Foundation Apprenticeship for Nursing Assistants in a Veterinary Setting.”

Helen Farrant Cert Ed RVN, Training Manager from Goddard Veterinary Group, said: “This is an ambitious yet crucial step for the profession to take to ensure a practice’s auxiliary employees have the right skills to do their job. Lantra is asking for our help to make sure it is a framework that is meaningful, so I urge everyone to get involved at this early stage so that our voices are heard and fed into this future Apprenticeship framework.”
